Solution

Cystic fibrosis is caused by a mutation in the gene called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). This gene controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your body's cells. In people who have cystic fibrosis, the gene doesn't work effectively. This causes thick, sticky mucus and salty sweat to be produced. The mucus clogs up tubes, ducts and passageways, especially in the lungs and pancreas.
