The mesosphere is the layer of the Earth's atmosphere that is directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere. It is the third highest layer, extending from about 50 to 85 km above our planet. Here's how it helps burn up asteroids and meteors:

  1. Entry: When asteroids and meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere, they are traveling at very high speeds. This is often tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.

  2. Friction: As these objects plunge into the atmosphere, they encounter a significant amount of friction with the air molecules in the mesosphere. This friction is due to the high speed at which these objects are moving.

  3. Heat Generation: This friction generates a tremendous amount of heat. The heat is so intense that it causes the surface of the meteor or asteroid to start to melt and vaporize. This process is known as ablation.

  4. Burning Up: As the object continues to descend and speed up, the heat continues to increase. Eventually, the heat becomes so intense that it causes the entire object to glow hotly and burn up. This is what we see from the ground as a shooting star.

  5. Disintegration: Most meteors and asteroids are completely burned up in the mesosphere. Only the largest objects are able to survive this intense heat and make it to the surface of the Earth.

So, the mesosphere acts as a protective shield, burning up most of the potentially harmful objects before they can reach the Earth's surface.
