Solution

Organisms are classified based on a system called the Linnaean system, named after Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist. Here are the steps:

  1. Domain: This is the highest rank in the classification system. There are three domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.

  2. Kingdom: Each domain is further divided into kingdoms. There are six kingdoms: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea/Archaebacteria, and Bacteria/Eubacteria.

  3. Phylum: Each kingdom is further divided into phyla (plural of phylum). For example, the Animalia kingdom is divided into several phyla, including Chordata (animals with backbones) and Arthropoda (insects, spiders, and crustaceans).

  4. Class: Each phylum is further divided into classes. For example, the Chordata phylum includes the Mammalia class (mammals) and the Aves class (birds).

  5. Order: Each class is further divided into orders. For example, the Mammalia class includes the Primates order (humans, apes, and monkeys) and the Carnivora order (dogs, cats, and bears).

  6. Family: Each order is further divided into families. For example, the Primates order includes the Hominidae family (humans and their close relatives).

  7. Genus: Each family is further divided into genera (plural of genus). For example, the Hominidae family includes the Homo genus (humans).

  8. Species: Each genus is further divided into species. This is the most specific rank in the classification system. For example, the Homo genus includes the species Homo sapiens (modern humans).

This system of classification is hierarchical, meaning that organisms that are closely related are grouped together at each level. For example, all organisms in the same species are more closely related to each other than they are to organisms in other species, genera, families, orders, classes, phyla, kingdoms, or domains.
