Question

Which of the following metal is present in the anode mud during refining of copper

Solution

During the electrolytic refining of copper, the impure copper is made the anode while a thin sheet of pure copper is made the cathode. The electrolyte used is copper sulphate solution. When electricity is passed through the cell, copper from the impure anode dissolves into the electrolyte and is then deposited on the cathode. The impurities in the anode fall off and settle at the bottom of the tank as 'anode mud'.

The anode mud often contains valuable metals such as gold and silver. Other metals like lead, selenium, tellurium, antimony, and nickel may also be present. However, the specific metals present can vary depending on the composition of the original copper ore.

Ans. (a) Electrolytic refining is used for metals like Cu, Zn, Ag, Au etc. The method to be used for refining an impure metal depends on the nature of the i as well as on the nature of impurities present in it. So, metals Au (gold) and Cu (copper) are refined by electrolytic refining.
