Solution

CURRENT ID PERCEPTIONS Infectious diseases have always been a part of human history, causing widespread fear and panic. My understanding of infectious diseases is that they are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi. These diseases can spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. I do feel threatened by infectious diseases, primarily because of their unpredictable nature and potential to cause severe illness or death. However, I also understand that with proper hygiene practices, vaccinations, and healthcare, the risk can be significantly reduced. I feel moderately informed about infectious diseases, but there is always more to learn, especially with new diseases emerging. In this course, I expect to gain a deeper understanding of infectious diseases, their causes, prevention methods, and treatment options.

CAREER GOALS AND NEEDS My career goal is to work in the field of public health, focusing on disease prevention and control. To achieve this, I need a strong foundation in microbiology, epidemiology, and health policy. I also need to develop skills in research, data analysis, and communication. Looking at job advertisements and Griffith University’s graduate attributes, I also see the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and ethical understanding. I hope this course will help me develop these knowledge and skills.

LEARNING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES To facilitate my learning and professional development, I plan to actively participate in all course activities, seek feedback from my instructors, and engage in self-study. I also intend to use AI tools to enhance my learning. AI can provide personalized learning experiences, instant feedback, and access to a vast amount of information. However, I also understand that AI has its limitations and cannot replace human interaction and critical thinking. I am also considering volunteering at a local health clinic to gain practical experience and develop my employability skills. This will provide me with a real-world context to apply what I learn in this course and further my understanding of public health.

Baseline Reflection Current ID Perceptions Reflecting on my current understanding and perceptions of infectious diseases, I realize that my knowledge is somewhat foundational but not comprehensive. Infectious diseases, in general, pose a significant threat to public health, and this perception is not limited to COVID-19. Diseases such as influenza, tuberculosis, and malaria have historically caused widespread morbidity and mortality, and emerging diseases continue to pose new challenges. I feel a sense of threat from infectious diseases due to their potential for rapid spread, the emergence of drug-resistant strains, and the global interconnectedness that facilitates their transmission. I believe I am moderately informed about infectious diseases, having taken courses in microbiology and immunology. However, I recognize that there is much more to learn, especially regarding the latest research, therapeutic approaches, and public health strategies. In this course, I expect to deepen my understanding of the physio-pathological aspects of human-pathogen interactions, the immune defense mechanisms, and the development of drugs and vaccines. I am particularly interested in learning about current hot topics in infectious diseases and how public health measures can control their spread. Career Goals and Needs My career goal is to become a public health specialist with a focus on infectious disease control and prevention. To achieve this, I need a robust understanding of microbiology, immunology, and epidemiology. Additionally, I need to develop strong analytical skills to interpret data and research findings, as well as effective communication skills to educate the public and collaborate with healthcare professionals. Attributes such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential in this field. The ability to stay updated with the latest research and advancements is crucial, as the landscape of infectious diseases is constantly evolving. I also need to cultivate a sense of empathy and cultural competence to address the diverse needs of different populations. Learning and Professional Development Strategies To facilitate my learning and professional development this trimester and beyond, I plan to engage actively with the course material and participate in discussions and workshops. I will make a concerted effort to read scientific literature on infectious diseases to stay informed about the latest developments. Additionally, I will seek opportunities for hands-on experience, such as internships or volunteer work in public health settings. Incorporating AI into my learning journey is something I am considering. AI tools can help analyze large datasets, identify patterns, and predict outbreaks, which are valuable skills in infectious disease control. However, I also recognize the need to understand the limitations of AI, such as potential biases in data and the importance of human oversight.
