Describe the functions of the respiratory system.

The respiratory system has several key functions:

1. Gas Exchange: The primary function of the respiratory system is to facilitate the exchange of gases, specifically oxygen and carbon dioxide. Oxygen is inhaled into the lungs and then diffused into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, is removed from the blood and exhaled out of the body.

2. Regulation of Blood pH: The respiratory system helps regulate the pH of the blood by controlling the levels of carbon dioxide - a major contributor to blood acidity. When carbon dioxide levels are too high, the pH of the blood decreases (becomes more acidic). The respiratory system responds by increasing the rate and depth of breaths to expel more carbon dioxide and return the blood pH to normal.

3. Protection: The respiratory system also has several mechanisms to protect the body from harmful substances. The hairs in the nose filter out large particles in the air, while the mucus in the lungs traps smaller particles. The cilia in the lungs then move the mucus upwards, out of the lungs, and into the throat where it can be swallowed or coughed out.

4. Vocalization: The movement of air through the larynx (voice box) allows us to create sounds for speech.

5. Olfaction: The sense of smell is also a function of the respiratory system, as the olfactory receptors in the nose are responsible for detecting odors.

6. Metabolism: Some cells in the lungs can metabolize certain substances like angiotensin and prostaglandins, contributing to the overall metabolic function of the body.
