Solution

Intersectionality is a concept often used in critical theories to describe the ways in which oppressive institutions (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, etc.) are interconnected and cannot be examined separately from one another. The term was first coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989.

In simpler terms, intersectionality is the idea that multiple identities intersect to create a whole that is different from the component identities. These identities that can intersect include gender, race, social class, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, age, mental disability, physical disability, mental illness, and physical illness as well as other forms of identity.

These aspects of identity are not "mutually exclusive" but are instead interwoven together and, as the Combahee River Collective says, "...we are actively committed to struggling against racial, sexual, heterosexual, and class oppression" and saw as their particular task the development of "integrated analysis and practice based upon the fact that the major systems of oppression are interlocking."

So, to answer your question, intersectionality refers to the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
