Settler colonialism, as it applies to North America, refers to the process by which European settlers arrived in the region, claimed the land as their own, and systematically displaced, marginalized, and often eradicated the indigenous populations already living there. This was not a singular event, but a continuous process that unfolded over centuries.

One of the most prominent examples of settler colonialism in North America is the English colonization of what is now the United States. Beginning with the establishment of Jamestown in 1607, English settlers began to arrive in large numbers, often pushing out indigenous tribes through warfare, forced removal, and the spread of diseases to which the native populations had no immunity.

Another example is the French colonization of what is now Canada. Similar to the English, the French settlers claimed the land, exploited its resources, and often forced indigenous populations into servitude or onto smaller, less desirable plots of land.

In both cases, the settlers viewed the land as a blank slate, ignoring or dismissing the rich cultures and societies that had existed there for thousands of years. This mindset, and the actions that resulted from it, have had lasting impacts on the indigenous populations of North America, many of which are still felt today.
