Face recognition primarily involves the fusiform face area (FFA) located in the fusiform gyrus on the ventral surface of the brain. This area is specifically dedicated to facial recognition and is less responsive to other types of objects. On the other hand, object recognition involves more distributed areas of the brain, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and the parahippocampal place area (PPA), which are responsible for recognizing various types of objects and scenes, respectively.

Holistic vs. Feature-Based Processing: Another key difference between face recognition and object recognition is the way in which these processes occur. Face recognition is typically thought to involve a more holistic process, where the face is perceived as a whole rather than as a collection of individual features. This is known as the "face inversion effect," where it is much harder to recognize faces that are upside down, suggesting that we recognize faces as a whole rather than by their individual features. In contrast, object recognition is typically thought to involve a more feature-based process, where individual features of the object are recognized and then combined to form a whole. This is why we can still recognize most objects even when they are viewed from different angles or in different lighting conditions.
