The sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes are all anatomical planes used to describe the location of body parts in relation to each other.

1. Sagittal Plane: This is a vertical plane that divides the body into left and right halves. Movements in this plane are forwards and backwards, such as walking or running.

2. Frontal Plane: Also known as the coronal plane, this is another vertical plane but it divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) halves. Movements in this plane are sideways, such as side lunges or waving hands side to side.

3. Transverse Plane: This is a horizontal plane that divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) halves. Movements in this plane are rotational, such as twisting the torso or rotating the arm.

An axis of rotation is a line around which an object rotates. In the human body, the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the plane of movement. For example, in movements occurring in the sagittal plane, the axis of rotation would be horizontal and left-right (corresponding to the frontal plane). For movements in the frontal plane, the axis of rotation would be anterior-posterior (corresponding to the sagittal plane). For movements in the transverse plane, the axis of rotation would be superior-inferior (corresponding to the vertical axis).
