What was Plan Number One and why did Pi reject it?

In Yann Martel's novel "Life of Pi," Plan Number One refers to Pi's initial plan to kill Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger with whom he shares the lifeboat. Pi realizes that living on the same boat with a wild and potentially dangerous animal could be fatal for him. Therefore, his first instinct is to get rid of the tiger.

However, Pi ultimately rejects Plan Number One for several reasons:

1. Lack of Skills and Tools: Pi is a 16-year-old boy with no experience or skills in hunting or killing, especially not a creature as formidable as a Bengal tiger. He also lacks the necessary tools to carry out such a task.

2. Moral and Ethical Dilemma: Pi, being a deeply religious and compassionate individual, struggles with the moral and ethical implications of killing a living creature. This internal conflict leads him to abandon his initial plan.

3. Realization of Mutual Dependence: Pi eventually realizes that Richard Parker's presence is helping him survive. The tiger gives him a purpose and a reason to fight for survival. He understands that they need each other to keep their sanity and hope alive in the vast, lonely Pacific Ocean.

4. Fear: Richard Parker is a large, powerful tiger, and Pi is understandably afraid of provoking him. The fear of retaliation from the tiger if his attempt to kill him fails is another reason why Pi rejects Plan Number One.

Instead of executing Plan Number One, Pi decides to coexist with Richard Parker, which involves taming the tiger and establishing his own territory on the lifeboat.
