How are genes and proteins related?

Solution

  1. Genes are segments of DNA that contain the instructions for building one or more molecules that help the body work. These molecules are often proteins.

  2. The process begins when the DNA in a gene is read to produce a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA). This process is known as transcription.

  3. The mRNA molecule then leaves the cell's nucleus and enters the cytoplasm, where it serves as a template for building a protein. This process is known as translation.

  4. During translation, a cellular structure called a ribosome moves along the mRNA, reading its sequence and linking together the appropriate sequence of amino acids. These amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.

  5. The sequence of amino acids in a protein determines its structure and function. In this way, genes control the structure and function of all the proteins in our bodies.

  6. Therefore, genes and proteins are related because genes contain the instructions for making proteins, and proteins carry out most of the work in our cells.
