What are the exocrine and endocrine function of the pancreas?

The pancreas is a vital organ that carries out both endocrine and exocrine functions.

1. Exocrine function: The pancreas serves an exocrine function by producing and secreting digestive enzymes that help to break down food in the small intestine. These enzymes include amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates; lipase, which breaks down fats; and protease, which breaks down proteins. These enzymes are secreted into the pancreatic duct, which leads to the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). This is the primary function of the pancreas, making up about 95% of its activity.

2. Endocrine function: The pancreas also serves an endocrine function by producing and secreting hormones that regulate blood sugar levels. These hormones are insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels by allowing cells to take in sugar, and glucagon, which raises blood sugar levels by causing the liver to release stored sugar. These hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream. This endocrine function is carried out by clusters of cells in the pancreas called islets of Langerhans.
