Solution

Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin are both antibiotics, but they belong to different classes and have different chemical structures and mechanisms of action.

  1. Amoxicillin: Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic, an analog of ampicillin, with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Chemically, it is (2S,5R,6R)-6-[(R)-(-)-2-Amino-2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)acetamido]-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylic acid. It inhibits the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis by preferentially binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are located inside the bacterial cell wall.

  2. Cloxacillin: Cloxacillin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic in the same class as penicillin. Chemically, it is (2S,5R,6R)-3,3-Dimethyl-6-[(5-methyl-3-phenyl-4-isoxazolyl)carbonylamino]-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylic acid. Cloxacillin is used against staphylococci that produce beta-lactamase, due to its large R chain which does not allow the beta-lactamases to bind. This drug has a weaker antibacterial activity than benzylpenicillin, and is devoid of serious toxicity except for allergic reactions.
