Solution
When you add concentrated sulphuric acid to the test tube containing solid NaCl, you will observe a reaction taking place. A gas will start to come out of the delivery tube.
To test the gas evolved, you will first use dry blue litmus paper and then wet blue litmus paper. If the gas is acidic, it will turn the blue litmus paper red.
The litmus paper will change color in the presence of an acidic gas. If the dry litmus paper changes color but the wet one does not, it indicates that the gas is a dry acid. If both change color, the gas is a wet acid.
Based on this activity, you can infer about the acidic character of dry HCl. If dry HCl was the gas evolved, the dry litmus paper would have changed color, indicating that dry HCl has acidic properties.
