Dysphoria | Types, Signs & Causes

Dysphoria is a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life. It's the opposite of euphoria.

Types of Dysphoria:

1. Gender Dysphoria: This is a condition where a person experiences discomfort or distress because there's a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity.
2. Body Dysmorphic Disorder: This is a mental disorder in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance.
3. Depressive Dysphoria: This is a state of feeling unwell or unhappy; a feeling of emotional and mental discomfort as a symptom of discontentment, restlessness, dissatisfaction, malaise, depression, anxiety or indifference.

Signs of Dysphoria:

1. Feeling sad or down.
2. Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate.
3. Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt.
4. Extreme mood changes of highs and lows.

Causes of Dysphoria:

1. Mental Health Disorders: Dysphoria is a common symptom of mental health disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders.
2. Hormonal Changes: Changes in hormone levels can also cause dysphoria, especially during periods of major hormonal change, like puberty, menstruation, or menopause.
3. Substance Use: Substance use can cause feelings of dysphoria, especially during periods of withdrawal.
