Solution

The foundational and analytical source of Sanskrit grammar is Ashtadhyayi. It was written by the ancient Indian scholar Panini. This text, composed around 6th century BCE, is the earliest known work on descriptive linguistics, and together with the work of his immediate predecessors (the Niruktas, Nighantus, and Pratishakyas) stands at the beginning of the history of linguistics itself. Ashtadhyayi consists of 3,959 verses that are divided into eight chapters, which is why it's named 'Ashtadhyayi', 'ashta' means 'eight' and 'adhyayi' translates to 'chapters'.
