Solution

(a) The boiling point of a compound is determined by the strength of the intermolecular forces. The stronger the intermolecular forces, the higher the boiling point. The intermolecular forces include hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole interactions, and London dispersion forces.

Alcohols have higher boiling points than alkanes and ethers of similar molar mass because they can form hydrogen bonds with each other. The more carbon atoms, the higher the boiling point because of the increased number of electrons, which leads to stronger London dispersion forces.

So, the order of increasing boiling points for the first set of compounds is:

Methanol < Ethanol < Propan-1-ol < Butan-2-ol < Butan-1-ol < Pentan-1-ol

(b) For the second set of compounds, alcohols (Pentan-1-ol) have the highest boiling point because of their ability to form hydrogen bonds. Aldehydes (Pentanal) have the next highest boiling point because they have a polar carbonyl group. Ethers (Ethoxyethane) and alkanes (n-butane) have the lowest boiling points because they can only form London dispersion forces.

So, the order of increasing boiling points for the second set of compounds is:

n-Butane < Ethoxyethane < Pentanal < Pentan-1-ol
