Solution

Rocks fold and fault due to the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates. The Earth's crust is divided into several large and small pieces, known as tectonic plates, which float on the semi-fluid layer of the mantle beneath them. These plates are constantly moving, albeit very slowly, due to the heat in the Earth's core causing convection currents in the mantle.

When these plates collide (a process known as a convergent boundary), the pressure can cause the rocks to fold or bend. This is often seen in mountain ranges, which are typically formed by the collision of two tectonic plates.

Faulting, on the other hand, occurs when the stress on the rock is too great and it cracks or fractures. This can happen in several ways. If the plates are moving apart (a divergent boundary), the rock can crack and form a rift. If the plates are sliding past each other (a transform boundary), the rock can fracture and move along the fault line.

In both folding and faulting, the type and extent of the deformation can vary greatly depending on the type of rock, the amount of pressure, and the speed at which the plates are moving.
