Solution

In the epic poem "The Odyssey" by Homer, the cattle that Odysseus and his men were warned not to touch belonged to the sun god, Helios. Tiresius and Circe, both seers, warned Odysseus that if his men slaughtered and ate the cattle, they would incur the wrath of Helios, who would ask Zeus to punish them.

The consequences of touching the cattle were not that they would turn into pigs or be stuck for another year. These are likely confusions with other parts of the Odyssey. Circe did turn some of Odysseus's men into pigs earlier in the story, but this was not related to the cattle of Helios.

The actual consequence, as foretold by Tiresius and Circe, was that if the men ate the cattle, they would all die except for Odysseus, who would return home late, alone, and find trouble there. This prophecy came true when Odysseus's men, stranded on an island and starving, disobeyed the warnings and slaughtered some of the cattle. As a result, Zeus destroyed their ship and all the men except Odysseus drowned.
